Crabtree & Evelyn is an online-only retailer of fragrance and body products that was founded in 1971. The company started in Massachusetts and was founded by Cyrus Harvey and Peter Windett. The name of the company was inspired by 17th-century renaissance Englishman John Evelyn, who was one of the most important supporters of conservation.
The products that the company initially sold were invented by Harvey, while Windett worked on the design. Before it became an online-only store, Crabtree & Evelyn had hundreds of physical locations around the world.
In 1996, the founders of the company sold it to investors, and since then the store has changed hands several times. In 2009, after a series of unprofitable quarters, all the physical stores of the outfit were closed. In 2018, the store announced that all retail and wholesale operations were to be stopped nationwide. For many people, that was the end of the company— but it wasn't.
In 2019, just a year after the closure of all retail and wholesale operations, the company relaunched as an online-only retailer. While the success that Crabtree & Evelyn has recorded since then hasn't compared to their earlier years, it is still enough to sustain their continued existence.
